To cleanse a place, expelling what is unwanted and welcoming what is needed. Smudging uses smoke to cleanse the upper areas of a space, while asperging uses salt water to cleanse the lower areas.

tracing the edges of the area first with the smoldering sage
then again with the consecrated water.
